Back in the day, when I used to coach contractors, one of my clients reached out to me because he was frustrated that he didn’t seem to be able to reach his goals. He had set some worthwhile, and very lofty goals for himself, yet they always seemed just out of reach. He asked me why this was happening. In his case, wasn’t happening.

That brought to mind a story I was once told. Although the tale is meant to be funny, to me it carries a deeper meaning. I’ll explain why after you read this anecdote.

Once there was a man whose life dream was to win the lottery. Being a religious man, he prayed incessantly for the lucky prize. For years he begged, groveled, cajoled his higher power to be chosen as the lucky one. Yet, year after year, he was, it seemed, ignored.

He wouldn’t give up though. He was determined that he should win the grand prize. One day after a prolonged, crazy rant about why he should win, he got a response. Finally the silence was broken. From on high came a booming voice. It shouted, “Buy a ticket!”

Funny story, yes. Yet full of meaning. How many of us have dreamed of riches, vacations, the perfect relationship, the big house, and a ritzy car, but haven’t put in the hard work that it takes to get them? Nothing is free in this life. You can do almost anything you want. You can have almost anything you desire. But if you don’t make plans, strategize, collaborate with others, and go the distance, you shouldn’t expect to get all of your wishes.

Every journey begins with one step. Every home starts with a solid foundation. Every action is preceded by an idea. Break your lofty goals into small steps. Don’t try to do them all at once, but one at a time. That is strategy. It takes patience and discipline. But if you remain consistent and persistent, you will thrive and grow. Find happiness in completing one step, then the next, and the next.
